Urwicks’s principles quick summary

  1. Unity of Objectives
    organisation is structured well if individuals can contribute to the enterprise’s objectives
  2. Organizational Efficiency
    org is efficient if the structure allows for minimum consequences or costs to effect the objectives
  3. Specialization
    the whole work should be divided amongst subordinates on the basis of qualifications, abilities and skills.
  4. Span of Management
    there’s a limit to the number of people one person can manage
  5. Scalar Chain
    same as before, continuous line of superiors through whom information/ commands should be relayed
  6. Unity of Command
    exact same as Henri Fayol’s
  7. Delegation
    authority must be delegated as far down the chain as possible
  8. Parity of authority and responsibility
    similar to Fayol but as a rule not just an observation
  9. Flexibility
    the org’s structure needs to be simple to understand but also flexible.
  10. Functional Definition
    every position and department in the org must have a clear definition of the results expected.
